You’re sunning yourself, lolling against a white painted rock face, hanging over the surf and debating whether to jump into the olympic size sea water pool at your feet or grab another chilled coconut from the ‘Crabbie Hole’ cafe. And ticked pink by the sun, you just cant decide whether you feel like you’re on a cruise liner or a private members club in Santorini.

You’re unashamedly smug as you glance over your sunnies at the sandy limbs fighting for space on Bondi beach in the near distance. A kilometer stretch of golden horseshoe cove, book ended by the cliff walk above you and the $M houses of North Bondi’s snorkel friendly, Ben Buckler.

A wave catches the edge of the pool and ripples into the swimmers with its spray, splashing you, bringing you back from your revery. There’s a yoga class starting in five minutes next to the kids pool, or you might decide to slip into the glass doored sauna and gaze out to sea. But no pressure, you’re allowed to stay all day if you wish.

Icebergs is located at the South end of the iconic landmark Bondi beach. Its close enough to survey any lifeguard ‘Bondi Rescue’ action, but separated by rocks and big rollers that only a blonde tanned ‘its a ripper mate” surfie could tackle.

It’s to the local lifesavers and swimming club members that we visitors owe thanks for this incredible hospitality. Setting its origins back to 1929, these legends wanted to maintain their fitness all year round and so started a club. At the beginning of each winter, members of the Icebreakers club have to swim laps in the pool - but only after huge ice blocks are thrown in to the water. As the outside air and water temperatures plummet, this annual event demonstrates that they are truly icebergs material.

And luckily for us, the members refused to allow this gem of a club to be bought and privatized in recent years. This means, they also rely on public support. You’ll pinch yourself when you pay the $5 entry fee and be desperate to share this slice of heaven with your nearest and dearest. Or maybe you won’t.
